Ammonites
The ammonite fossils on display were found
in Madagascar. It is a species that lived about 120
million years ago. Even though these fossils are commonly
called ammonites, they are actually just the ammonite's
shell. The ammonite was a marine creature protected
by a uniquely shaped mother-of-pearl external shell.
Since soft body tissues typically don't survive the
fossilization process, the ammonite's shell is the only
evidence we have that these wonderful creatures ever
existed. Ammonite shell fossils from different locations
and different times vary greatly in appearance because
of the many different factors that have to come together
for fossilization to occur. Popov's has an extensive
selection of high quality whole, cut and pyritized ammonites
we'd love for you to see.
