Fossilized Limestone
The location of the quarry where this
fossilized limestone comes from is in the Atlas Mountains
in Northern Africa in the country of Morocco. The age
of the fossils was determined using the latest radiometric
dating technology. The fossils in this limestone are
about 400 million years old. The largest and most evident
fossils are ammonites and orthoceras. When they roamed
the ocean depths 400 million years ago, these creatures
were among the most advanced living organisms on Earth.
Both creatures were protected by a hard external shell.
The fossilized shells of these animals are the only
evidence paleontologists have that these creatures ever
existed because soft body tissues usually don't survive
the fossilization process. The shells from the orthoceras
look like slender cones and the shells from the ammonite
look like coiled ropes. We invite you to come explore
the stunning specimens of fossilized limestone on display
at Popov's.
