Megladon Teeth
These are real fossilized teeth from the
largest shark that ever lived, a megalodon shark. Most
shark experts estimate that megalodon sharks could have
attained 50 feet in length and weighed at least 3 times
more than the present day great white shark. However,
some shark experts believe that megalodons could have
been much bigger! The megalodon shark was a super-predator
that dominated the oceans from 25 to 1.5 million years
ago. Immature megalodons ate mainly fish, but fossil
evidence shows that mature megalodons even preyed on
whales.
Sharks have been around for over 300 million
years, but their teeth are the only fossilized evidence
scientists have of their existence. That is because
their skeleton is made of cartilage and cartilage, as
well as other soft body tissues, usually doesn't survive
the fossilization process. These particular teeth were
found in the fossil-rich Hawthorne Formation in Colleton
County in South Carolina. The Hawthorne Formation and
all the fossils it contains, has been dated to be 5
to 10 million years old.
The quality of fossilized teeth varies
from barely recognizable (most common) to perfect (extremely
rare). All of the teeth on display at Popov's are considered
to be Grade A Collectible!
