Peacock Marble
Peacock marble is fashioned from a solid
block of marble taken from a quarry in central China.
Chemically, marble is recrystallized limestone. Limestone
is a sedimentary rock consisting primarily of calcium
carbonate that came from the remains of marine organisms,
which accumulated on ocean bottoms over millions of
years.
The vibrant coloring of the marble is
due to a variety of other minerals (such as: silica,
iron oxides, and magnesium) that were deposited at the
same time as the shells of the marine organisms. The
swirling pattern in the marble is the result of the
intense heat and pressure of the metamorphic process
that changed the limestone into marble. In this process
the deposited minerals were literally stirred up and
then recrystallized together to form the marble. There
is no way to fully describe the beauty of these marble
pieces in words alone, so we invite you to see it for
yourself at Popov's.
